Description

This is a very impressive Large early 19th century gilt mirror. The subtle details in the gesso and timber frame make this hugely decorative and the wear on the frame softens the gilt to a nice level. The size and clear plate make this a great addition to a room. The plate isn't new but is later than the age of the mirror. Overall condition very good. Can be used either portrait or landscape.

Height 123cm Width 95cm

Date of Manufacture

TallBoy Interiors has dated this Early 19th Century Spanish Gilt Mirror to the 19th Century.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Early 19th-century gilt mirrors often feature classical proportions, hand-applied gold leaf over a gesso base, and architectural framing reflecting the neoclassical and regional craftsmanship of the period.

These frames are typically constructed from carved timber, such as pine or hardwood, coated in layers of gesso and bole before being meticulously gilded with thin sheets of gold leaf.

Authenticity is assessed through the presence of hand-carved details, oxidised or distressed silvering on old float or cylinder glass, and historic gesso shrinkage cracks beneath the gold leaf.

An antique gilt mirror works effectively as a focal point when hung above a modern minimalist sideboard or fireplace, creating a deliberate contrast between historic texture and clean lines.

Gilt surfaces are extremely fragile and should be dusted gently with a dry, soft artists brush. Avoid all liquid cleaners, chemical sprays, and abrasive cloths to protect the delicate gold leaf.
