FAQs

Swing mirrors, also known as toilet or dressing mirrors, became popular in the late seventeenth century and evolved through the Georgian and Victorian eras, designed originally to sit upon a chest of drawers or dressing table for personal grooming.

These pieces were typically crafted from solid hardwoods and veneers such as mahogany, walnut, or oak, featuring hand-silvered glass plates held within adjustable wooden frames.

Authentic pieces often exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints, old secondary woods, hand-blown or early silvered glass with natural foxing, and traditional turnings or brass hardware consistent with the period.

A period mirror adds warmth and historical contrast when placed atop a modern minimalist sideboard or used functionally on a traditional wooden chest of drawers.

Keep the wood conditioned with appropriate furniture wax and clean the glass gently using a soft, dry cloth, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners that can damage the original silvering or finish.
