The St Ives studio furniture movement emerged in Cornwall during the early to mid-20th century, heavily influenced by the Arts and Crafts philosophy. Makers in this region focused on functional, handcrafted wooden pieces that utilised traditional local techniques and materials, often reflecting a rustic aesthetic.

These chairs are traditionally constructed from native hardwoods such as oak or elm, featuring pegged mortise and tenon joints for structural stability. The seats are typically hand-woven using natural rush or seagrass, wound tightly around a wooden frame to create a durable, textured surface.

Authentication involves examining the hand-turned wooden components for tool marks, checking the tightness and material of the rush weaving, and looking for makers marks, stamps, or signatures often found underneath the seat frame or on the stretchers.

Rush-seat chairs introduce organic texture and warmth, making them effective for contrasting against sleek, contemporary dining tables. They complement rustic, minimalist, and transitional interior schemes by adding artisanal character and tactile depth without overwhelming the space.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity levels to prevent the wood from drying out and the natural rush from becoming brittle. Clean the wood periodically with a soft, dry cloth and apply occasional treatments of microcrystalline wax, while avoiding excessive moisture on the woven seat.
