Originating in the mid-to-late 19th century, the Arts and Crafts movement promoted traditional craftsmanship, simple forms, and medieval, folk, or rural styles of decoration, reacting against mass production.

These pieces typically combined native hardwoods such as beech or ash for the frame, which were often ebonised or stained, with woven natural marsh rush or seagrass for the seating.

Authentication involves examining joinery methods such as pegged mortise and tenon joints, signs of genuine age in the timber and rush wear, makers stamps or paper labels, and traditional hand-turned components.

These versatile items work effectively around a modern minimalist dining table or as accent seating in a study, providing textural contrast against sleek surfaces and neutral colour palettes.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity levels to prevent the rush from drying out and snapping, avoiding direct sunlight, and cleaning the wooden frame occasionally with a soft, dry cloth without harsh chemical polishes.
