FAQs

A Gainsborough chair is a wide-seated, upholstered armchair with open arms, originating in the mid-18th century during the Georgian era, designed primarily for reading or writing at a desk.

Authentic period pieces typically feature solid timber frames made from dense hardwoods like mahogany or oak, joined using traditional mortise and tenon techniques, and traditionally stuffed with horsehair before being finished with leather upholstery.

Authentication involves examining the timber grain, tool marks, secondary woods in the frame construction, the type of joinery used, and the natural patination and wear on the leather and wood surfaces.

This type of seating anchors a room when placed against dark walls or alongside contemporary minimalist furnishings, creating a curated contrast between traditional craftsmanship and modern design.

Preservation requires keeping the piece out of direct sunlight, maintaining stable indoor humidity levels to prevent timber splitting, and periodically treating the leather with conservation-grade wax or leather food to maintain suppleness.
