This Regency cheval mirror is made from warm brown mahogany with glass and brass elements in a grand Regency style. The piece stands 145 cm high, 48 cm wide and 43 cm deep, supported on splayed legs that terminate in brass box castors. The arched mirror frame incorporates ebony stringing, while the turned upright posts feature ball finials at the top and brass adjustment knobs on the sides. In a home today, this freestanding floor mirror functions well in a bedroom, dressing room or hallway to provide full-length reflection. The design includes a panelled and polished reverse, making it suitable for placement where the back of the frame remains visible in the room.

A Regency cheval mirror is a full-length, freestanding dressing glass suspended between two upright posts, allowing the mirror frame to tilt. Developed during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, it takes its name from the four-legged supporting frame, as cheval is the French word for horse.

Craftsmen primarily constructed these mirrors using solid mahogany or rosewood, fitted with brass castors and metal adjustment screws. The mirror glass original to the Regency era was typically mercury-backed plate glass, which naturally develops light foxing over time.

Authentic period examples feature hand-turned upright posts, original brass caps and castors, hand-cut joinery, and threaded brass or wooden adjustment knobs. The back of the mirror frame usually retains solid timber backboards designed to protect the silvering.

A cheval mirror functions effectively in a dressing room, bedroom corner, or hallway to reflect light and expand visual space. Placing dark mahogany timber against neutral wall finishes and minimalist furniture highlights the historic frame silhouette.

Dust the timber framework regularly using a soft microfibre cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish once a year to protect the original finish. Clean the mirror glass with distilled water on a soft cloth, avoiding commercial solvent sprays that can deteriorate vintage mirror backings.
