Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

Nineteenth-century gilt mirrors frequently drew inspiration from earlier Baroque and Rococo revivals, characterised by elaborate, flowing scrollwork, asymmetrical motifs, and deep relief carving.

These pieces typically feature a carved wooden base (often pine or softwood) coated in layers of gesso, which was then hand-carved, smoothed, and finished with gold leaf or metal leaf gilding.

Authenticity is indicated by hand-applied gesso cracking with age, hand-carved detailing with minor tool inconsistencies, original mercury or silvered mirror plates showing oxidisation, and period-appropriate backboards held with old headless nails.

A large ornate mirror provides a striking focal point when hung above a modern minimalist sideboard or simply leaned against a plain wall to create a deliberate contrast between contemporary simplicity and historic texture.

Gilt surfaces are extremely delicate and should only be dusted gently with a dry, soft feather duster or microfibre cloth, avoiding all water, liquid cleaners, and chemical polishes which can strip the fragile gold leaf and gesso.
