Florentine giltwood mirrors originate from Florence, Italy, where master craftsmen employed intricate carving and water-gilding techniques on wooden frames, a tradition that flourished during the Renaissance and experienced major revivals in the 19th century.

These mirrors are typically constructed from softwoods or hardwoods such as pine or lime, coated with layers of gesso, intricately hand-carved, and finished with thin sheets of gold leaf applied over a bole base.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of age such as minor losses to the gesso, oxidisation and foxing on the original mercury or silvered glass plate, and hand-carved tool marks on the reverse of the wooden frame.

Such mirrors serve as dramatic focal points when hung above a mantelpiece, console table, or paired with minimalist modern furnishings to create a striking contrast between old and new design elements.

Giltwood surfaces should be dusted extremely gently with a soft, dry ostrich feather duster, avoiding all chemical cleaning agents, water, and abrasives which can permanently damage the delicate gold leaf layer.
