This is an antique hall mirror. A French, gilt gesso ornate mirror in the Baroque manner, dating to the early Victorian period, circa 1850.

Baroque Revival mirrors of the nineteenth century are characterised by ornate scrollwork, shell-like rocaille motifs, and heavily sculpted frames that draw inspiration from seventeenth-century French design.

These frames were constructed from carved timber coated in gessoa mixture of chalk and binderwhich was then moulded, detailed, and finished with applied gold leaf.
