FAQs

The Chippendale style, originating in the 18th century, is characterised by elaborate asymmetrical scrolls, naturalistic motifs like leaves and flowers, and influences from Rococo, Chinese, and Gothic design.

These frames were typically carved from softwoods such as pine or gesso-coated timber, then meticulously layered with fine gold leaf applied over a water-based bole using traditional gilding techniques.

Authentic period pieces often show age-related characteristics such as minor craquelure in the gesso, oxidisation or foxing on the original mercury or silvered glass plates, and hand-carved joinery at the reverse.

An ornate gilt mirror works effectively as a focal point when hung above a minimalist mantelpiece or modern sideboard, creating a striking contrast between historical craftsmanship and contemporary simplicity.

Water gilded surfaces are extremely sensitive to moisture and abrasion; they should only be dusted gently with a dry, soft feather duster and kept away from direct sunlight and humidity.
