An overmantle mirror is a large decorative looking glass historically designed to be hung or placed on the mantelpiece above a fireplace, often featuring landscape orientations or arched tops to draw the eye upward.

These pieces typically utilised a carved softwood or pine base coated in layers of gessoa mixture of chalk and binderwhich was then water-gilded or oil-gilded with fine metal leaf.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the backboards, hand-carved joinery, micro-crazing in the gesso, and the presence of silver nitrate oxidisation or slight imperfections within the historic glass plate.

Positioning the piece above a modern fireplace or leaning it casually against a neutral wall adds architectural scale, reflects natural daylight, and creates a striking contrast between historic ornamentation and minimalist decor.

Gilt surfaces are extremely fragile and should only be dusted gently with a dry, soft ostrich feather duster, avoiding all chemical solvents, abrasive cloths, and moisture which can damage the delicate metal leaf.
