Description

A Georgian period, solid elm corner elbow armchair, dating from the late C18th (George III). This well figured elm framed armchair features a curved back rest, over broad continuous arm rail with scrolled ends, three turned supports separated by twin pierced back splats. Drop in seat, upholstered in brown velvet, raised on square legs supported by stretchers.

Dimensions:

This armchair measures approximately 78 cm (30.75") tall, 76 cm (30") wide, and 59 cm (23.25") deep. The seat height is approximately 43.5 cm (17.125").

Condition:

Please see the pictures for details of the items condition. - This chair is in a reasonably good and original condition commensurate with its age. Some marks and blemishes. Some old and extinct worm holes, typical of elm antique furniture, that does not affect the sturdiness of the chair in any way, and now treated as way of precaution. There is damage to the front knee, though the joint is secure. It could be filled but it would take away from the chairs charm. Repairs to the bottom of both splat saddles, though these are well polished in. There is lots of aged old wear. The patina is excellent, good colour, and very pleasing wax polish. The seat is reasonable and the velvet is quite clean. Cleaned and waxed. Very serviceable and ready for use. - As with all vintage & antique furniture there will be signs of use, marks, wear & tear, etc.

A corner armchair, also known as a roundabout chair, features a continuous curved backrest supported by turned pillars and typically includes a square seat set diagonally.

English country furniture makers frequently utilised native timbers such as elm, oak, ash, and fruitwoods due to their local availability and durability.

Authenticity is assessed through traditional construction methods, such as hand-cut joints, patination consistent with age, and the use of period-appropriate secondary woods.

An antique corner chair functions effectively as a standalone accent piece in a study, hallway, or living room, contrasting clean modern lines with historic texture.

Maintain antique elm by keeping it away from direct heat sources and sunlight, and apply occasional applications of quality beeswax to nourish the wood.
