Victorian button-back armchairs typically feature deep-buttoned upholstery, sprung backs and seats, low profiles, and turned wooden legs often mounted on castors, reflecting the comfort and ornate aesthetic of the 19th century.

These chairs were traditionally constructed with a solid hardwood frame, hand-tied coil springs, horsehair or wool stuffing, and webbed foundations, finished with tightly fitted fabric secured by tufting and piping.

Authentic pieces can be identified by traditional joinery methods, hand-turned timber legs, heavy iron or brass castors, hand-tied springs, and the presence of age-appropriate wear and oxidisation on the internal framing and fixings.

An antique armchair can be reupholstered in a contemporary textile such as plain linen or velvet to create a striking contrast against modern minimalist decor while retaining its classic architectural silhouette.

Preservation involves keeping the piece away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber warping and fabric degradation, alongside regular gentle vacuuming using a low-suction attachment.
