Victorian Rococo Revival armchairs, prominent from the mid-nineteenth century, feature elaborate hand-carved timber frames, C-scroll and S-scroll motifs, cabriole legs, and deep button-tufted upholstery. Walnut and rosewood were the preferred timber choices during this movement.

Traditional construction incorporated solid hardwood frames, predominantly walnut or mahogany, joined with mortise and tenon joints. The upholstery layers typically consisted of coiled steel springs, webbed jute support, horsehair padding, and natural fibre woven fabrics.

Authentic period armchairs show evidence of hand-carving irregularities, hand-cut joinery, and natural patination on the timber. Original features often include brass castors attached with fitted brass cups or screws to the lower legs.

Position the armchair as a focal point in a contemporary living space or reading corner, set against neutral wall shades to accentuate the carved timber silhouette. Balance the classical patterns by surrounding the piece with minimalist lighting and modern floor coverings.

Clean the timber using a soft cloth and apply beeswax sparingly along the grain to maintain timber hydration. Keep the armchair away from direct sunlight and central heating sources to prevent textile fading and wood shrinkage, vacuuming the upholstery gently with a brush attachment.
