A Victorian button back armchair is a mid-to-late nineteenth-century upholstered lounge chair defined by deep diamond tufting held in place with fabric-covered buttons along the backrest.

These chairs were crafted using solid hardwood frames such as mahogany or walnut, stuffed with horsehair and natural fibres, and finished with brass castors and woven textile or velvet upholstery.

Authentic period examples feature hand-turned wooden legs, brass or iron castors, traditional coil springs tied with twine, and deep hand-tufted buttoning rather than modern shallow staple tufting.

Place the chair alongside minimalist contemporary lighting or an unadorned side table to create a focal point that balances historic texture with clean lines.

Vacuum the fabric gently using a soft brush attachment, keep the frame away from direct heat sources to prevent wood drying, and treat metal castors with light oil to preserve movement.
