Nineteenth-century gilt wood mirrors are characterised by hand-carved wooden frames coated in a layer of gesso and gold leaf, often featuring neoclassical or Victorian architectural motifs such as columns, dentil moulding, and floral rosettes.

These pieces typically employ a softwood or hardwood base frame covered with fine gesso (a plaster-like mixture) to smooth the surface before the application of delicate gold leaf or gold paint, frequently assembled using traditional joinery and pinned construction.

Authenticity is identified by inspecting the reverse side for hand-cut boards, oxidised fixings, the application of genuine water gilding or oil gilding over gesso, and age-related foxing or silvering irregularities within the glass plate.

An antique gilt mirror works effectively when mounted above a fireplace mantelpiece or propped against a large wall to reflect natural light, creating a deliberate contrast between historical ornamentation and clean, modern architectural lines.

Preservation requires dusting gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth without applying liquid cleaners, alcohol, or abrasives, as moisture and harsh chemicals can damage the fragile historic gesso and flake the delicate metallic leaf.
