This long wall mirror dates from the Art Deco period of 1930. The piece is constructed from timber with a glass mirror plate set inside a low profile frame finished in dark brown and gold giltwood. The design incorporates stepped shoulders and stylised leaf carving along the outer edges, with an open top section exposing the angular bevelling of the glass. Foxing is visible within the mirror plate. The dimensions measure 49 cm high by 145 cm wide and 4 cm deep. Suitable for domestic placement above the mantel in a living room, dining room or hallway, the item functions effectively as an overmantel mirror or a standard wall mirror. The low horizontal format integrates easily into traditional and contemporary interiors alike.

Art Deco overmantel mirrors originated during the 1920s and 1930s, designed specifically with a wide, low proportion to sit above a fireplace mantelpiece, featuring geometric silhouettes, stepped shoulders, and stylised motif carvings.

These mirrors were constructed with carved timber frames, frequently finished using gilding, dark paint, or metal leaf, and fitted with heavy silvered glass panels.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit age-appropriate desilveration or foxing on the glass plate, solid wood backing boards secured with traditional fixings, and hand-worked frame joinery.

Position the mirror centrally above a chimney breast, a low hallway console table, or a dining room sideboard to anchor the wall space and reflect light across the room.

Dust the frame regularly using a soft, dry brush or microfiber cloth, avoiding liquid cleaning agents or abrasive chemical sprays near the gilded wooden surface.
