FAQs

Ceylonese carved ebony items were produced in colonial Sri Lanka during the 19th century, often intended for the European export market. Local artisans utilised dense, dark tropical hardwoods to create highly ornate pieces featuring deeply carved botanical motifs.

These boxes are typically crafted from solid ebony, a heavy and dense heartwood known for its deep black coloration. Construction involves precise joinery, hand-carved relief panels, and fitted brass hinges or locks.

Authentic pieces exhibit the natural weight, tight grain, and deep dark colour characteristic of true ebony, alongside hand-carved detailing that shows minor tool marks. Examination of the interior construction, aged brass hardware, and hand-cut dovetails or joints also helps verify period provenance.

An antique box serves as a functional decorative object that can be placed on a console table, bookshelf, or coffee table to store small accessories. Its dark wood tone adds textural contrast and historical depth to contemporary spaces.

Ebony should be kept away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity to prevent cracking or warping. Dusting with a soft, dry cloth is recommended, avoiding harsh chemical polishes or excessive moisture.
