Ebonising is a finishing technique used to stain light-coloured timber, typically fruitwood or beech, to imitate ebony. This method became particularly popular during the Victorian and Edwardian eras to achieve a sleek, dark aesthetic.

Mirrors from around 1900 typically feature solid timber frames, often softwood or hardwood treated with ebonised finishes or gesso. The reflective plates were traditionally silvered glass, sometimes displaying characteristic foxing or ageing over time.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit period-appropriate joinery, hand-applied finishes showing natural wear, and older glass plates that may display minor imperfections, oxidation, or bevelled edges consistent with early manufacturing methods.

These pieces can be positioned to anchor a room, hung above a mantelpiece, or leaned against a wall to create a sense of depth and contrast. Their dark frames work effectively alongside both minimalist modern decor and layered, maximalist spaces.

Maintenance involves dusting the frame gently with a dry microfibre cloth and avoiding harsh chemical cleaners that can damage the historical finish. The glass can be cleaned sparingly using a mild glass cleaner applied to a cloth rather than sprayed directly onto the surface.
