This Victorian music box from circa 1875 is an ebonised wood and rosewood case with brass hardware and glass. The dark brown rectangular container has delicate inlaid stringing along the lid and front edges, a brass keyhole escutcheon, two small side pins, and stands on four simple block feet. Inside the open lid sits a glazed inner frame protecting a printed paper tune card decorated with floral illustrations. The mechanism comprises a large polished brass cylinder, a comb, and brass turning components inside the dark compartment. Measuring 15 cm high, 36.5 cm wide, and 25 cm deep, the piece fits neatly on a sideboard top, mantelpiece, or desk in a library, study, or drawing room. The music box demonstrates the classic craftsmanship of the period with its tidy string inlay, clean black and natural wood finishes, and visible brass works. It operates as both a mechanical instrument playing eight airs and a decorative object for display. A buyer can place the box in a traditional or eclectic interior, positioning it on a flat surface where visitors can inspect the mechanics and read the tune sheet through the glazed cover. The intact paper label lists the musical selections under an illustrated floral header, adding authentic historic detail to the interior cabinet.

Originating in the nineteenth century, cylinder music boxes are mechanical instruments that produce sound using a revolving brass cylinder fitted with pins that pluck the tuned teeth of a steel comb.

These instruments were crafted using precision brass movements and steel combs, housed inside wooden cabinets made from rosewood, walnut, or ebonised timber, often embellished with stringing or marquetry.

Authentic period examples feature solid brass mechanical components, a heavy cast bedplate, individually cut comb teeth, and frequently retain an original printed paper tune card on the interior lid.

A cylinder musical box works well as a decorative tabletop conversation piece when placed on a sideboard, console, or bookshelf, complementing both traditional and contemporary interiors.

Keep the internal mechanism dry and free from dust, avoid overwinding the spring motor, and store the wooden case away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity to protect the timber veneer.
