Description

Beautiful 18th Century Yorkshire Antique Elm Armchair

This early Georgian antique Yorkshire country armchair is more unusual to be made entirely in elm which is a fabulous, original colour. A very good honest example, all pegged construction and having a panelled back rest with lovely carved decorations to the top rail. The back rest has a nice rake and with lovely open shapely arms on turned supports. Below the solid elm seat is panelled, a clever draught excluder design, to stop draughts going up ones legs. All in excellent condition throughout, a really lovely original example.

Eighteenth-century country armchairs, particularly those from regional hubs like Yorkshire, are characterised by robust construction, local timbers such as elm or oak, and vernacular design elements reflecting domestic utility and craftsmanship.

These pieces typically utilised indigenous hardwoods like elm for seats and oak for frames, employing mortice and tenon joints, pegged construction, and hand-carved panels rather than factory-produced fixings.

Authenticity is identified through period-appropriate tool marks, natural patina and oxidisation on the timber, hand-cut joinery, and consistent wear patterns appropriate to centuries of domestic use.

Such pieces function well as accent seating in contemporary living rooms or studies, where their rich textures and historic forms provide a grounding contrast to minimalist or modern furnishings.

Preservation involves maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight and heat sources, and occasionally treating the timber with traditional beeswax to nourish the wood without damaging the patina.
