18th Century Comb Back Ash and Elm Windsor Chair

18th century
Description

This is a lovely quality, all original 18th century Ash and Elm comb back windsor. We found this in the boarders and absolutely love the design. The seat has a great shape and the whole chair is very tactile. As with most windsor chairs there are repairs. This has had both arms re screwed but its an antique restoration and has worked perfectly with not flex or obvious weakness. The repairs just add to the overall character. There is also light traces of original paint.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A comb back Windsor chair features vertical spindles fitted into an arm rail and topped with a horizontal crest rail resembling a hair comb. This style emerged in Britain during the early 18th century as a solid, comfortable form of regional vernacular seating.

Craftsmen typically used a combination of native hardwoods: dense elm for the solid carved saddle seat, flexible ash or steam-bent beech for spindles and arm rails, and turned oak, yew, or ash for the legs and stretchers.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-planed seat surfaces, irregular hand-turned spindles, through-tenon joint construction wedged from above, and oval timber shrinkage caused by centuries of natural drying.

A regional Windsor chair functions well as an accent seat in a hallway, bedroom corner, or placed alongside contemporary neutral upholstery to create textural contrast.

Apply a light coat of natural beeswax polish annually along the grain, keep the piece away from direct heat sources to prevent wood movement, and maintain stable indoor humidity.
