Overmantel mirrors gained immense popularity during the 18th and 19th centuries, specifically designed to be hung or placed on the mantelpiece above a fireplace to reflect candlelight and natural light around the room.

Authentic period mirrors typically feature a carved wooden frame, often pine or softwood, layered with gessoa mixture of plaster of Paris and chalkwhich was then hand-gilded with gold leaf.

Authenticity can be determined by inspecting the mirror glass for foxing, bubbles, and uneven thickness, as well as examining the wooden backing boards, hand-cut nails, and the intricate crazing of the gesso layer over time.

An antique mirror adds a layer of historic contrast and luminosity to contemporary spaces; position it above a minimalist fireplace or lean it against a living room wall to create an illusion of expanded space.

Gilded surfaces are extremely delicate and should be dusted gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding any liquid cleaners, chemical solvents, or abrasive materials that can strip the fragile gold leaf.
