Nineteenth-century French gilt mirrors are characterised by intricately carved wooden frames coated in gold leaf or gilt gesso, often reflecting classical motifs inspired by preceding periods such as Louis XIV, XV, and XVI.

These frames were typically constructed from pine, oak, or softwood covered in a layer of gesso, which was hand-carved, burnished, and then leafed with gold or metal alloy. The glass panes were traditionally silvered using mercury or early chemical silvering processes, resulting in characteristic foxing and oxidisation.

Authenticity is indicated by hand-carved wooden construction rather than modern resin, aged gilt with natural wear and patination, and older mirrored glass exhibiting slight distortions, bubbles, or dark spots known as foxing.

An antique gilt mirror works effectively as a focal point when hung above a fireplace mantel, positioned opposite a window to maximise natural light, or placed on a floor leaning against a wall to create verticality in contemporary spaces.

Gilded frames require gentle dusting with a soft, dry brush and must be kept away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and moisture. Chemical cleaning agents should never be used on the gilt surface, as they can strip the delicate gold leaf.
