An overmantel mirror is a large decorative looking-glass specifically designed to be hung or placed on the mantelpiece above a fireplace. During the Victorian era, these mirrors became prominent fixtures in formal reception rooms, often designed to reflect light and enhance the sense of space within domestic interiors.

These mirrors are typically constructed from a carved wooden or composition (compo) frame, which is then layered with gesso and gilded using gold leaf or metallic paint. Traditional joinery is used for the wooden backing, often featuring original pine framing and hand-cut fixings.

Authentic period pieces often display signs of age such as foxing and oxidisation on the original mercury or silvered glass plate. The frame construction typically utilizes historical gesso work, hand-carved detailing, and period-appropriate screws or backboards rather than modern fixings.

Placing a large antique mirror above a fireplace creates an immediate focal point, effectively bridging historical craftsmanship with contemporary design. It can be mounted securely to the wall or left to rest on a mantel shelf to bounce natural light throughout the room.

Gilded surfaces are exceptionally fragile and should be dusted gently with a soft, dry brush without the use of chemical cleaning agents. The glass plate can be cleaned using a lint-free cloth and a minimal amount of distilled water, taking care to avoid contact with the delicate frame.
