This large Victorian Rococo Revival dressing table mirror dates from the 19th century and is hallmarked in London for 1896 by maker William Comyns. The piece consists of a sterling silver frame, glass mirror plate, and royal blue velvet backing cloth with a hinged stand. The solid silver surround has pierced details, fine chased decoration in the Classical style, winged cherubs, centaurs, scrolling acanthus repousse scrollwork, and a pointed top with a shell-like finial. The oval mirror plate features a bevelled edge and is angle adjustable within the frame, showing minor tarnish alongside obvious wear to the royal blue velvet backing cloth. Hallmarks are stamped clearly on the frame. Measuring 51 cm high, 47 cm wide, and 30.5 cm deep, the mirror sits upright on a flat surface. Today, this dressing table mirror functions practically as an accessory for a bedroom dressing table or a sideboard top in a hallway. The easel back allows for straightforward placement on horizontal surfaces, reflecting light and adding a decorative element to domestic interiors. The combination of reflective glass, polished sterling silver, and deep blue velvet suits traditional bedroom settings or antique display spaces where it stands independently without permanent wall mounting.

Victorian silver dressing table mirrors from the late 19th century frequently feature elaborate repousse work, Rococo Revival scrolls, foliage, and figurative motifs such as putti. Designed for tabletop use, they typically incorporate an easel back construct made of wood wrapped in velvet or leather.

High-end tabletop mirrors of this era feature sterling silver frame facings stamped over a wooden core structure, paired with thick bevelled glass plates and dark velvet or morocco leather backings.

Authentic British sterling silver from this era bears official hallmarking, including a makers mark, town mark (such as the leopards head for London), lion passant standard mark, and a specific date letter.

An ornate silver mirror serves as a focal point on a bedroom dressing table, marble sideboard top, or bathroom console. Pairing ornate silver metalwork against matte backdrops creates a balanced textural contrast.

Clean the silver frame gently using a soft, lint-free cloth and a specialized silver polish, avoiding harsh chemicals that could seep into the backing. The glass should be cleaned sparingly with a damp cloth to protect the underlying mirror silvering.
