This pair of late 17th century side chairs belongs to the Charles II period and is made of solid oak with a dark brown finish. Each chair presents a high slatted back surmounted by a scalloped crest rail, flanked by baluster-turned uprights with ball finials. The rectangular panel seats show moulded edges, resting above four sturdy legs connected by horizontal turned stretchers and a lower front stretcher with spool turnings. The timber displays a rich dark patina with visible surface wear, grain variations, and tonal shifts across the wood. The chairs measure 107 cm high with a seat height of 47 cm. These traditional English country house chairs are suitable for placement around a dining table, in a hallway, or as accent seating in a living room or study. Their classic profile and sturdy construction make them practical for everyday use while providing historical character to an interior setting. They blend well with rustic, period, or eclectic home decor schemes, offering functional seating with traditional craftsmanship.

Late 17th-century English oak chairs are characterized by tall backs, vertical slatted or carved splats, turned front legs, and heavy stretchers. Originating during the Carolean and William and Mary periods, these designs reflect a shift toward taller, more decorative timber seating.

Chairs from this era were constructed from solid English oak using joinery techniques such as mortise and tenon joints held together with wooden pegs. Components like stretchers and legs were shaped using hand lathes, resulting in distinctive turned details.

Authentic period chairs display irregular hand-turned elements, visible wooden peg construction, and natural wear patterns on lower stretchers where feet rested. Dark surface patination and historical shrinkage around joints also indicate genuine period construction.

These tall side chairs function well as accent seating in entrance halls, flanking a console table, or placed in corners of a living room. Combining dark timber seating with light walls or contemporary art creates visual contrast in traditional and modern settings.

Dust surfaces regularly using a clean, soft cloth. Period oak benefits from an occasional application of natural beeswax polish to maintain the timber patination, while keeping the item away from direct heat sources prevents cracking.
