Description

A George III painted wheel-back or star-back open armchair, associated to designs by Thomas Chippendale. C.1775

The cartouche shaped back with eight pierced spokes radiating from a central medallion, raised on cabriole legs in the 'French' taste with out swept arms.

The traditionally upholstered seat with a black horsehair fabric, finished with brass studs. Structurally sound.

The unique wheel-back of this chair bears a striking resemblance to a collection of cartouche wheel-back chairs captured by Edwin Smith in his 1971 photograph of 'The Balcony Room' at Dyrham Park, Gloucestershire.

Furthermore In 1774, Thomas Chippendale supplied six beech ‘Star back’ chairs with painted decoration to Ninian Home for Paxton House, Scotland.

Interestingly a set of twelve mahogany dining chairs, featuring nearly identical backs and legs, once owned by the Earl of Plymouth, were auctioned at Christie's, London, on May 17, 2017, as lot 91, selling for £100,000 (see last Image).

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The George III period, spanning from 1760 to 1820, is characterised by refined neoclassical proportions, skilled craftsmanship, and an integration of various influences including Gothic, Chinese, and French taste.

Master craftsmen typically employed native hardwoods such as beech, elm, and mahogany, utilizing mortise and tenon joints alongside hand-carved details and traditional upholstery methods.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate joinery, hand-mixed pigments with natural aging and craquelure, and wear patterns consistent with genuine historical use rather than artificial distressing.

Position the chair as a focal point in a neutral living space or study, allowing the historical hand-painted details and unique silhouette to contrast against modern minimalist lines.

Maintain stable indoor humidity levels, keep the piece away from direct sunlight and heat sources, and clean surfaces exclusively with a soft, dry cloth without chemical polishes.
