Slipper chairs originated in the early 18th century and became particularly popular during the Victorian era. Designed with low seats, they were traditionally used in ladies dressing rooms and bedrooms to allow for comfortable sitting while wearing cumbersome clothing or footwear.

Authentic period pieces typically feature a sturdy hardwood frame, such as mahogany, walnut, or beech, traditionally padded with horsehair, wool, or cotton wadding, and secured with coil springs before being finished with high-end fabric upholstery.

Authentic pieces can be identified by hand-tied coil springs, traditional frame joinery such as mortise and tenon, hand-carved wooden components, and evidence of ageing on the internal webbing and padding materials.

This type of chair works well as an accent piece in a bedroom or dressing area, pairing effectively with neutral walls to let patterned upholstery stand out, or positioned beside a fireplace for a low-profile seating option.

Preservation involves keeping upholstered items out of direct sunlight to prevent fabric fading, regularly using a soft brush attachment on vacuums to remove dust, and consulting professional conservators for cleaning or reupholstering.
