FAQs

Overmantel mirrors gained prominence during the 18th and 19th centuries, designed specifically to hang above fireplace mantels to reflect candlelight and amplify light within formal rooms.

Authentic period mirrors typically feature hand-carved wooden frames built from pine or hardwood, embellished with moulded gesso detailing and finished with original silvered glass plates.

Authenticity is indicated by old hand-beveled or mercury glass with foxing and oxidisation, traditional joinery in the wooden frame, and period-appropriate gesso moulding techniques.

Positioning the mirror above a fireplace or console table anchors the rooms proportions, while mixing distressed painted finishes with contemporary furniture creates a balanced, eclectic aesthetic.

Preserve the frame by avoiding harsh chemical cleaners on the gesso finish, and clean the glass gently using a soft cloth with distilled water or specialist conservation glass cleaner.
