A Windsor chair is a chair built with a solid wooden seat into which the legs and back-spindles are turned and wedged directly, originating in England during the early 18th century.

They were traditionally constructed using a combination of local timbers, often featuring a yew or elm seat, ash or beech spindles and bows, and fruitwood or elm for carved splats.

Authenticity is assessed through traditional joinery methods, such as wedged through-tenons, tool marks indicating hand-shaping, age-related patina, and shrinkage cracks appropriate to the timber.

Pairing a wooden antique chair with contemporary minimalist furniture creates a striking contrast that highlights the sculptural qualities and natural grain of the timber.

Maintain antique wooden furniture by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources, and occasionally nourishing the surface with traditional beeswax rather than modern silicon polishes.
