Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian reading chairs, sometimes historically referred to as cockfighting or library chairs, were designed in the 19th century to allow the sitter to straddle the seat facing backwards, resting their arms on a padded top rail while utilizing an attached pivoting book rest.

These chairs were typically constructed using solid mahogany or walnut frames, featuring brass swivel mechanisms for the adjustable book rest, traditional horsehair stuffing, and heavy linen or calico foundation layers beneath the final upholstery.

Authentic pieces feature period-appropriate hand-cut joinery, solid timber frames made of dense mahogany, heavy cast brass hardware for the articulating desk arm, and traditional hand-stuffed upholstery foundations.

This type of functional seating works effectively as a statement piece in a study or home office, offering a distinct historical silhouette that pairs well with contemporary minimalist desks or traditional wood-panelled walls.

Preservation involves keeping the wooden frame conditioned with appropriate wax, protecting textiles from direct sunlight to prevent fading, and consulting professional conservators for traditional re-upholstery using period-accurate materials.
