This nineteenth-century Georgian armchair, commonly known as a cock fighting chair, has a dark brown mahogany frame with simulated rosewood elements, burlap hessian upholstery, and brass castors. The design includes a horseshoe-shaped top rail, a six-legged frame with turned front legs, and plain rear legs. The upholstery is uncompleted, showing exposed burlap covering the curved backrest, padded seat, and circular frame base. The original Lewty brass castors remain fitted to the legs. The chair measures 69 cm high, 65 cm wide, and 65 cm deep, with a seat height of 41 cm. Suitable for placement in a gentleman's library or study, this piece serves as a distinctive seating option or a decorative project for an interior space.

FAQs

Popularised in the 18th century, these specialised chairs were designed for a sitter to sit astride facing backwards, using the padded top rail to support the arms and chest while reading or observing events.

Frames were predominantly crafted from solid hardwoods such as mahogany or oak, with internal padding composed of horsehair, straw, and hessian prior to receiving top leather or textile upholstery.

Authentic period examples feature hand-turned timber legs, brass castors, period-appropriate joinery such as mortise and tenon joints, and structural proportion built for backward sitting rather than standard armchair lounging.

Deconstructed chairs present strong sculptural interest, making them suitable as focal art pieces in contemporary studies, hallways, or eclectic living spaces alongside modern minimalist decor.

Timber elements should be maintained with natural beeswax paste and kept away from direct heat sources, while exposed original hessian padding should be lightly brushed or vacuumed on low suction to prevent fibre degradation.
