Description

An excellent set of 6 antique mahogany Chippendale Style dining chairs in the classic Chippendale style. They were made in England, and date from around the 1890-1910 period.

The quality is superb, they are very sturdy and well made. The pierced back rests have lovely details, they have gadrooned front edges, and sit on cabriole legs with acanthus leaf carving terminating in claw and ball feet.

We have had these recently re-polished, the mahogany has a gorgeous colour tone and patina. We have also had the drop in seats re-upholstered in a cream cotton fabric, the condition is excellent throughout for their age.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

The Chippendale style, originating from the 18th-century designs of Thomas Chippendale, is characterised by elaborate carving, interlaced splat backs, and cabriole legs ending in ball and claw feet.

Master craftsmen predominantly used solid mahogany for Chippendale pieces due to its strength, rich grain, and suitability for intricate, detailed hand-carving.

Authenticity is assessed through joinery methods, such as hand-cut mortise and tenon joints, wood oxidation patterns, tool marks from hand-chiselling, and the density and weight of old-growth mahogany.

Pairing these ornate chairs with a minimalist, clean-lined modern dining table creates a striking contrast that highlights the craftsmanship of the seating without overwhelming the room.

Maintain antique mahogany by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent wood splitting, and nourish the timber periodically with traditional beeswax rather than modern silicone polishes.
