Windsor chairs originated in England during the early 18th century, developing from vernacular furniture-making traditions where spindles were socketed directly into a thick wooden seat.

They traditionally feature a combination of timbers such as elm for the sculpted seat, ash or beech for the bentwood bow and spindles, and fruitwood or oak for the legs, joined using traditional wedged mortise and tenon joints.

Authentic pieces often exhibit hand-carved saddle seats, tool marks from adzes or scorps, wedged spindle tops protruding through the seat, and natural wear patterns and oxidisation consistent with age.

They can be used as desk chairs, paired with a contemporary dining table to create contrast, or placed as accent seating in a living room to add organic warmth and historical texture.

Maintain the timber by dusting with a dry cloth, avoiding direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent wood splitting, and periodically applying a microcrystalline wax to nourish the finish.
