This 19th Century Victorian overmantle wall mirror displays an ornate rectangular wooden frame covered in a gilt gold leaf finish with a textured cross-hatch ground. The decoration includes elaborate floral scrollwork, acanthus leaf moulding, and a beaded sight edge, along with visible losses, knocks, marks, wear, imperfections, repairs, alterations, refinishing, and touching up. The later replacement mirrored glass sits inside the heavily carved outer border. The overall maximum dimensions measure 96 cm high by 81 cm wide by 10 cm deep, while the internal mirrored glass measures 70 cm high by 55 cm wide. Suitable for hanging in either portrait or landscape orientation, the piece serves as a decorative focal point above a mantelpiece in a living room, hallway, or bedroom. The sturdy structure contains no loose joints or woodworm, and the glass remains in very good condition. It brings traditional character to period interiors and sits well against neutral walls in contemporary or classic home settings.

An overmantel mirror is a substantial decorative wall mirror designed to hang directly above a fireplace mantelpiece. Popular throughout the 19th century, these mirrors feature gilded wood or gesso frames created to reflect light and enhance the visual scale of reception rooms.

Frames from this period were typically constructed from carved timber, coated with layers of gesso plaster, and adorned with moulded composition ornaments. Gold leaf was then hand-applied using water gilding or oil gilding techniques before being burnished.

Authentic period pieces often show light oxidisation on the original glass, subtle wear revealing the red or grey clay bole beneath the gold leaf, and traditional wood backings secured with square-headed nails.

Positioning a gilt mirror above a fireplace or console table provides a focal point in contemporary or traditional spaces. Combining ornate gilded frames with minimalist modern furniture creates an intentional, curated contrast.

Dust gilt frames gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush or feather duster. Avoid water, commercial sprays, or liquid cleaning agents, as moisture can dissolve water gilding and loosen delicate gesso ornaments.
