Originating in the late 19th century, the Arts and Crafts movement championed traditional craftsmanship, natural materials, and simple forms as a reaction against industrial mass production.

These pieces typically utilised solid regional hardwoods such as oak or elm for the frame, combined with natural woven rush or seagrass for the seat and back panels.

Authentic items generally feature traditional joinery methods such as mortise and tenon joints, hand-turned components, natural wear patterns, and organic cordage rather than synthetic alternatives.

Such pieces provide textural contrast when placed against minimalist or modern architecture, acting as functional sculptural elements that ground a contemporary scheme.

Maintenance involves keeping the item away from direct heat sources and moisture extremes, periodically cleaning with a soft brush, and applying microcrystalline wax to nourish the timber.
