This 19th Century Victorian overmantle wall mirror displays a rectangular form in giltwood and gesso with a warm gold finish, red bole under-gilding showing through, and a bevelled edge glass plate. The wide border is decorated with a carved acanthus leaf moulding and corner blocks, alongside visible signs of age including minor losses, knocks, marks, wear, repairs, alterations, refinishing, touching up, and light oxidation streak patterns on the glass. Overall maximum dimensions measure 105cm high by 92cm wide by 8cm deep, while the mirrored glass measures 77cm high by 65cm wide. Designed for placement above the mantel in an English Country House setting, the piece can be hung in either portrait or landscape orientation to suit the proportions of a room. It functions effectively as a decorative wall mirror in a reception room, hallway, or bedroom, bringing traditional period character and reflective light to interior spaces.

Designed specifically to sit above a fireplace hearth, 19th-century overmantel mirrors typically feature substantial proportioned frames with rich gilding, created to bounce light across grand reception rooms.

Frames were constructed from carved timber or composition moulding coated with layers of gesso plaster, finished with red clay bole, and leaf-gilded before housing hand-cut mirror glass.

Authentic pieces feature signs of aged gesso beneath worn gilding showing reddish undertones, natural desilverising on the original glass plate, and period timber backing boards.

Position the mirror centrally above a fireplace or credenza to create an anchor point, balancing ornate golden frame textures against clean neutral wall tones.

Dust gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding water or liquid chemical cleaners that can dissolve delicate gesso layers and gilding.
