A vinaigrette is a small pocket container used during the Georgian era to hold a sponge soaked in aromatic vinegar, designed to be opened for relief against unpleasant odours or fainting.

These items were typically fabricated from sterling silver, often featuring an internal gilt or gold-wash interior to protect the metal from the corrosive properties of the acidic vinegar, accompanied by an intricately pierced and engraved grille.

Authentic items feature period-appropriate hallmarks including a makers mark, standard mark, assay office mark, and date letter, alongside hand-engraved decoration and traditional construction methods such as tightly pinned hinges.

This small object can be displayed inside a glass-fronted cabinet, incorporated into a tabletop vignette on a desk, or showcased upon a dedicated tray alongside other small silver collectables.

Preservation involves minimal cleaning with a soft cloth to avoid removing the delicate gilt interior or wearing down the crisp engraving, while avoiding abrasive silver polishes entirely.
