This Arts and Crafts wall mirror dates from the 1900 period. The oak timber exhibits a dark brown finish with a prominent quarter-sawn grain, complemented by a central glass mirror plate within stepped mouldings. The design incorporates flared uprights, a carved arched crest with scroll motifs, and two round turquoise ceramic cabochon inserts in the lower corners. Normal marks and scuffs commensurate with age are visible on the wood surfaces. The piece measures 52 cm high, 64 cm wide, and 2 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this mirror suits placement above the mantel in a living room, study, or hallway, integrating well into an English Country House interior aesthetic.

FAQs

Originating in the late nineteenth century, Arts and Crafts mirrors feature hand-crafted wood construction, visible joinery, and natural motifs, often eschewing mass production in favour of traditional craftsmanship.

Frames were predominantly crafted from solid woods like quarter-sawn oak, chestnut, or walnut, frequently accented with hand-carved panels, hammered copper, brass, or enamel cabochons.

Look for structural details such as mortise and tenon joints, natural timber grain, stylized architectural profiles, original glass plate reflections, and hand-fitted enamel or ceramic inlays.

Position the mirror above a minimalist console table or mantelpiece to create an architectural focal point that bridges contemporary decor with traditional woodwork.

Dust the timber frame regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply beeswax polish periodically, ensuring moisture and liquid cleaners are kept away from ceramic or glass elements.
