Description

Superb 19th century English Rococo style carved giltwood overmantle. The frame beautifully carved with trailing floral and foliate decoration, and surmounted by a Ho Ho bird. Finished in oil and water gilding. The lovely mercury mirror plate is in good condition, there are some small areas of deterioration and some pale spotting. Wooden panelled back.

This large overmantle mirror dates from the Victorian period around 1860, following an elaborate Rococo Revival style. The piece consists of a wooden panelled back supporting a mercury mirror plate, housed inside a substantial frame finished in oil and water gilding with a bright gold colour. The ornate structure displays asymmetric C-scrolls, rocaille detailing, and extensive foliate carving with trailing floral and leaf trails running down the sides. A prominent scrolling top crest features a carved bird at the apex, while the bottom rests upon shaped feet. Measuring 181 cm high, 155.5 cm wide, and 12 cm deep, this large furnishing is designed for placement above a mantel in a living room, drawing room, or hallway. The reflective plate shows signs of age with small areas of deterioration and pale spotting across the surface, complementing the traditional gilded finish.
