Description

Superb 19th century English Rococo style carved giltwood overmantle. The frame beautifully carved with trailing floral and foliate decoration, and surmounted by a Ho Ho bird. Finished in oil and water gilding. The lovely mercury mirror plate is in good condition, there are some small areas of deterioration and some pale spotting. Wooden panelled back.

FAQs

Victorian Rococo Revival mirrors featured asymmetric C-scrolls, rocaille motifs, elaborate foliate carving, and fluid organic curves inspired by 18th-century French Rococo styles. These pieces were crafted with wooden frames layered in gesso and finished with gold leaf gilding.

19th-century overmantel mirrors were typically constructed from pine or lime wood frames covered in carved gesso moulding, finished using water or oil gilding with genuine gold leaf, and fitted with mercury-amalgam or early silvered glass mirror plates.

Authentic period giltwood mirrors display natural oxidisation, slight distressing or greyish undertones in the mirror silvering, hand-carved joinery on the wooden backboards, and red or yellow clay bole showing through worn areas of gold leaf.

A large gilded overmantel mirror is traditionally positioned directly above a fireplace mantelpiece to draw the eye vertically and amplify ambient light. It can also be styled atop a formal dining room sideboard or positioned in an entrance hall to create perspective.
