This pair of George IV hall chairs from the 19th Century is made from heavy dark brown mahogany with a warm timber tone. Each chair displays a waisted shaped back featuring carved acanthus scroll work and a raised shield centred with a finely carved hippocampus sea horse crest and husks below. The unusual balloon shaped seat includes a moulded seat frame above bold turned octagonal tapering legs at the front and sabre legs at the rear. These substantial chairs measure 91.4 cm high, 42.5 cm wide, and 47 cm deep, remaining in very good original condition. Their grand Regency style and sturdy timber construction suit placement in a hallway, entryway, or formal dining space within a traditional home.

George IV hall chairs produced between 1820 and 1830 bridge the late Regency and early William IV periods. Designed for display in grand entrance halls, they typically feature solid wooden seats and carved timber backrests, often decorated with heraldic crests or coat-of-arms motifs.

Cabinetmakers primarily utilised high-grade solid timbers such as West Indian mahogany, oak, or walnut. These chairs featured mortise and tenon joinery alongside hand-carved back panels, requiring no fabric upholstery.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-carved armorial details, turned or reeded front legs, and sabre back legs. Inspection of the underside typically reveals hand-sawn timber surfaces, traditional joinery construction, and natural aged patination.

Place a pair of hall chairs symmetrically alongside a console table or mirror in an entryway or corridor to create a formal focal point. Their compact depth and unupholstered structure make them suitable for narrow hallways or reception rooms.

Maintain the finish by dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and applying a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year. Keep the timber away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight to prevent drying or finish deterioration.
