FAQs

Adjustable armchairs, often incorporating mechanical ratchets or pivots, gained popularity in the 19th century as comfort and ergonomic design became increasingly valued in domestic interiors.

These chairs typically feature a sturdy hardwood frame, such as oak, walnut, or mahogany, combined with traditional joinery, metal adjustment mechanisms, and heavy woven textile upholstery.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the hand-forged metal mechanisms, tool marks on the wooden frame, natural wear patterns, and traditional upholstery methods consistent with the period.

Pairing this piece with neutral contemporary furnishings allows the textured upholstery and rich wood tones to serve as a focal point in a living room or study.

Preservation involves keeping the piece away from direct sunlight and heat sources to protect the fabric and wood, alongside regular gentle vacuuming of the textile and occasional conditioning of the timber.
