Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This set of six nineteenth-century country kitchen dining chairs comprises five side chairs and one carver armchair. Constructed from elm with a warm brown finish, the pieces exhibit solid panel seats, H-stretcher bases, and open backs featuring pierced lattice splats. The timber displays visible historic marks, knocks, cracks, scratches, and treated extinct woodworm holes. The armchair includes outward-curving wooden armrests supported by vertical posts, while all six chairs rest on straight legs connected by reinforced stretchers. Measuring 51 cm wide by 42 cm deep by 97 cm high for the side chairs, and 57 cm wide by 46 cm deep by 95 cm high for the carver, these seats provide durable functional seating for a traditional dining room or farmhouse kitchen. The sturdy construction makes them suitable for daily household use around a family dining table.

FAQs

19th-century country elm dining chairs typically feature durable native hardwood construction, often incorporating classical design influences such as Chippendale-style pierced back splats adapted for vernacular household use.

English country chairs of this era were predominantly constructed using native timber such as elm for solid seats due to its wide board size and resistance to splitting, alongside ash, oak, or fruitwood for the legs and frame.

Authentic pieces exhibit distinct wild grain patterns characteristic of elm, hand-cut mortise and tenon joinery, historical wear around stretchers, and minor asymmetrical variations inherent to handcrafting.

Pair these timber chairs with a minimalist oak or zinc-topped dining table to create contrast, balancing traditional craftsmanship with contemporary clean lines in a kitchen or dining area.

Maintain the finish by dusting with a soft cloth and applying a neutral beeswax polish annually, while keeping the timber away from direct heat sources to prevent shrinkage or splitting.
