We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An overmantel mirror is a large wall-mounted looking glass traditionally designed to hang specifically above a fireplace mantelpiece in nineteenth-century interiors, often featuring architectural arched profiles.

These pieces typically comprise a carved softwood or composition frame finished with gold leaf applied over a gesso base, housing silvered plate glass with bevelled or flat edges.

Authentic period pieces often exhibit hand-applied water gilding, foxing or oxidisation within the mirror plate, traditional joinery at the frame corners, and hand-sawn backing boards secured with old screws or nails.

Placing the mirror above a fireplace creates a focal point that reflects natural light, while contrasting its ornate gilded frame against minimalist walls introduces historical depth and texture to contemporary schemes.

Dust the gilded frame gently with a soft dry brush and clean the glass using a lint-free cloth and mild glass cleaner sprayed onto the cloth rather than directly onto the mirror to prevent moisture damage to the backing.
