1900 - 1920
Description

Makers labels - Chairs and Sofa by Collins & Hayes Archway Rd London. An early 20th century ladies and gents pair of armchairs, still in their original but distressed leather upholstery with later cotton seat cushion. The leather has signs of old repairs and have that lived in look so popular today. The actual frames are very solid, with superb oak pilaster carvings to the front. The springs under the seats are unusually good condition and still very firm. A super pair of chairs well worthy of reupholstery if the distressed look is not for you.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Designed as a complementary set, a ladies and gents pair typically features one taller armchair intended for a gentleman and a slightly lower, proportioned armchair for a lady, popular in late 19th and early 20th-century interiors.

These armchairs were constructed using solid hardwood frames, coil steel springs, natural stuffing, full-grain leather hide, and hand-carved timber arm supports or feet.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved decorative motifs, deep button tufting with natural age-related creasing, traditional spring tied construction underneath, and subtle surface patination on the leather.

Position the pair across from a modern sofa or flanking a fireplace to introduce organic texture, warm timber tones, and structural weight into a contemporary living area or study.

Keep leather away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent drying or cracking, dust with a soft dry cloth, and apply a specialised leather conditioning balm periodically to preserve suppleness.
