The frame is carved with ‘les pearls’ which symbolises strand of pearls and leaf motifs throughout. It's adorned with an elaborately carved pierced crest with richly carved floral garlands draping on each side and scrolled crest at the base.

This antique mirror retains its original bevelled edge glass with some foxing original gilt with some ‘touching up’ over the years, red oxidation showing through and its original backboards. All in home ready condition. C1870

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Nineteenth-century giltwood mirrors frequently draw upon earlier classical, rococo, or baroque revivals, characterised by elaborate ornamentation, cartouches, and applied gold leaf over a gesso and wooden base.

Authentic pieces are typically constructed from carved softwood or hardwoods such as pine or gesso-coated composition ornaments, finished with thin layers of gold leaf applied over a bole layer.

Authentication involves examining the plate glass for silver degradation, inspecting the reverse for hand- cut wood boards or older fixings, and checking the gesso and gold leaf for natural oxidisation and craquelure.

Placing an antique giltwood mirror above a modern minimalist mantelpiece or console table creates a striking focal point, balancing contemporary clean lines with historic texture.

Dusting should be performed gently with a dry, soft brush. Avoid using liquid cleaners, chemical solvents, or abrasive cloths, as moisture and friction can easily damage delicate water-gilded surfaces.
