Convex mirrors, often called bullseye mirrors, gained immense popularity during the Regency and Federal periods, frequently featuring a carved eagle crest symbolising national pride and authority.

Authentic period pieces are typically crafted from carved gessoed wood, finished with gold leaf gilding, and feature a spherical blown glass mirror plate housed within an ebonised inner reeded moulding.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the hand-carved wooden construction under the gesso, the presence of foxing or distortion in the original curved glass plate, and period-appropriate joinery techniques.

These statement pieces work effectively when hung singly as a focal point above a mantelpiece or console table, reflecting natural light and expanding the visual depth of the room.

Gilded surfaces are exceptionally fragile and should be dusted gently with a soft feather duster, avoiding all chemical cleaners, excess moisture, and direct sunlight to prevent cracking of the gesso.
