Windsor chairs originated in England during the early 18th century, developing in rural areas where local craftsmen utilised green woodworking techniques to construct sturdy, comfortable seating with distinctive turned legs and spindle backs.

Traditional Windsor chairs were constructed using a combination of timbers chosen for specific properties, typically featuring a solid elm or yew wood seat, ash or yew for the bentwood hoop and spindles, and beech for the turned undercarriage.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved saddle seats with adze marks, wedged tenon joints where the legs pass through the seat, natural timber grain variation, and signs of age such as surface wear and oxidisation.

Pairing a traditional wooden chair with a minimalist contemporary dining table creates a striking contrast, while placing it as a singular accent piece in a study adds warmth and historical character.

Maintain antique wooden furniture by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber splitting, and nourish the surface periodically using traditional beeswax rather than modern silicone polishes.
