A matched pair of Jacobean Revival armchairs dating from 1930 comprises two substantial seating units made from dark brown oak. Each chair has a high, straight back incorporating carved leaf motifs at the top and centre, flanked by upright barley twist columns and topped with turned finials. The arms include red leather padded armrests secured with close-set brass studding along the edges, resting on barley twist supports. Overstuffed seats are upholstered in matching red leather, trimmed with brass studs around the base. The framework stands on barley twist legs united by matching barley twist stretcher rails near the floor, with turned block feet at the base. Each armchair measures 126 cm high, 62 cm wide, and 62 cm deep. These armchairs suit placement in a gentleman's library, a study, a formal living room, or a traditional hallway as statement seating. They provide functional upright seating with padded armrests and upholstered seats for reading, working at a desk, or general sitting. The sturdy oak construction and durable red leather upholstery support daily domestic use while maintaining a formal period aesthetic.

FAQs

Jacobean Revival chairs draw inspiration from 17th-century English designs, featuring spiralled turning known as barley twist detailing, openwork wood carving, and high, structured backrests.

These items are predominantly constructed from solid oak or walnut, often paired with leather, velvet, or needlepoint upholstery and finished with decorative brass studding.

Authentic period revival pieces feature traditional mortise and tenon joinery, subtle variations in hand-carved foliage motifs, and natural patination across high-touch areas of the timber.

They work well as statement carver chairs at the ends of a dining table, positioned symmetrically in a grand entrance hall, or paired alongside minimalist contemporary furnishings to create visual contrast.

Apply a high-quality beeswax polish along the wood grain periodically to preserve the timber, and treat the leather with a specialist conditioner to prevent drying and cracking.
